A Winning Tradition

January 17, 2018

We have started the countdown to football's ultimate stage: Super Bowl LII. Come February 4, 2018, the Super Bowl LII Champions will hoist up their Vince Lombardi Trophy in an emotional victory for all of the world to see.

While football has been voted the most popular sport in America for over 30 years in a row, the Vince Lombardi Trophy has it's own fabled history and it intimately involves Tiffany & Co., the iconic American-born brand established in New York City during the 1800s.

Tiffany & Co. holds its own with an incredible legacy that includes, amongst many other interesting facts, inventing and popularizing the diamond solitaire engagement ring (by elevating the solitaire diamond up on prongs, allowing light to reflect through the facets) still known as the "Tiffany Setting," as well as re-designing the Great Seal of the United States that currently graces the back of the one dollar bill.

The unlikely coupling between Tiffany & Co. and the Super Bowl Championship Game began in 1966 when Tiffany & Co. VP and designer, Oscar Riedener, met with the NFL Commissioner and sketched out, on a cocktail napkin, the design of what would later become known as the Vince Lombardy Trophy; named after the legendary Green Bay Packers coach.

Keeping with that sketched out simple, yet timeless design, which is consistent with Tiffany & Co.'s heritage, each year the 22-inch tall Vince Lombardi trophy is carefully crafted out of seven pounds of silver by Tiffany & Co artisans, using age-old hand engraving and silversmithing techniques. The attention to detail and craftsmanship is what ultimately results in a trophy that represents the tremendous culmination of work and dedication it takes to become a Super Bowl Champion.

The Vince Lombardi Trophy is not Tiffany & Co.'s only connection to the most widely watched sports event in American history, they are also credited with designing and producing the Super Bowl Champion Rings for at least seven different Super Bowl Championships.

Tiffany & Co.'s enduring designs extend out to their flagship stores. Zaniboni Lighting fixtures have been selected to showcase that classic and timeless look.

Here at Zaniboni, we are excited to see who comes out on top this year. Contribute to our office poll: Who will be hoisting up the Vince Lombardi Trophy this year? Comment below!
